Social Action Poster Research

Writer's picture: Mahin KaraniMahin Karani

Updated: Jan 21, 2021

Purpose:

To campaign

To bring about national change in America

Aims:

The aim of this social action poster is to make people aware of the gun control laws in America and how they need to be changed as chocolate with a toy inside is banned instead of an assault weapon.

Techniques:

The main photos colors are muted to make the viewer focus more on the text that is written. The text above the children has a black highlight to show its importance to the viewer. There is even smaller text on bottom of the poster which says, “We won’t sell Kinder eggs in the interest of child safety. Why not assault weapons?”. The rhetorical question is there to question the viewers opinion on gun control in America. The text that says “Guess which one” is in red to suggest that this is an emergency/it is dangerous. The two students seem to be standing in front of the classroom as they are presenting something which can make it seem like they are also interested in the topic of gun control. There also seems to a slight vignette which diverts the focus of the picture to the center of the photo. The photo is also a medium shot which also helps pull the main focus on the students instead of the main classroom around them.

Impact:

Moms Demand Action is an organization that is fighting for public safety measures that can protect people from gun violence. They even have a second organization called Student Demand Action that does the same thing but reaches out to younger people. “Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action Volunteers Made 3.7 Million Calls and Texts to Voters This Cycle, With Student Volunteers Registering More than 100,000 Young Voters Nationwide”- Everytown.org . They have over six million supporters.

Purpose:

To make people aware.

To bring about national change in brazil

Aims:

They want more people to be more careful while driving. They also want to stop people from driving while they are drunk.

Techniques:

The hand on the left, with the green car, seems to be coming out of the darkness which could mean he didn’t see the red car because he was drunk. The car is green because green suggests that the driver was sick or drunk and the car on the right is red because it is in danger. The photo is lit from the front and from the back. It is lit from the front to show the punching action and it is lit from the back to show the droplets from the actor spitting. The text that is written below the accident is in a font that makes it seem like it was written quickly as if someone knew something bad was going to happen. The “Don’t drink and drive” text is red to show that this is dangerous is an emergency. The photo is a medium close up of the actors face to show emphasis of the punch and the impact of the cars hitting each other.

Purpose:

To make people aware

To bring about a local or national change

Aims:

To promote animal welfare in the country through education, public awareness, affordable sterilization and veterinary care, and the rehabilitation and rehoming of cats and dogs in need

Techniques:

This poster shows two images of the same cat with a different owner and text that says that it is the same cat with a different owner. This is to show the viewer that there are people that treat their pets horribly and you could help them. The two images look like they are shot at a medium close up so that we can see the cat and its surroundings. The picture on the right also looks brighter and makes the cat look happier while the one on the left is very dull and makes the cat look abused. The picture on the right is also lit properly while the one on the left is dull and barely lit up which makes the cat seem more hurt. There is a lot of space that isn’t used which could indicate that there are more animals that need help as they couldn’t capture all of them in one photo. The text below the picture on the right is very small which can bring the viewer closer to the picture and making them read it.

Impact:

Since Cara is a pet nurse they spay and neuter dogs and cats. They have spayed and neutered a total of 15,506 pets since 2006. 14,938 of them are cats and 568 dogs. Which means they not only help people adopt pets but they also help people who already have pets as well since they are a clinic.

I think in my posters I will use a medium close up of whatever my subject will be as most of the poster above use a medium close up and they are pretty effective for what their purpose is. So if my subject was a plastic fork I would click a picture of it and in the background I would have a picture of a landfill with the following text "STOP USING SINGLE USE PLASTICS" written above the fork in a small font. By using a small font the reader will have to get really into the poster to read it which means they would want to analyze the whole poster. Or I could use a bigger and bolder text to make sure the viewer can see the message and so that it stick the idea in their head.
