Promote the band (The Beatles) As the any band or artist creates a music video, they promote themselves.

Promote the song (Paperback Writer) People like songs better when there is a video along side the song. The song gets promoted as more people want to watch the music video.

Extension of outlets (Music channel, Direct DVD, CD Sales, Website, Download) All you need is love - First song to play on TV Internationally was All You Need Is Love by The Beatles. This was a huge step up in technology as people all around the world would be able to watch TV from different countries and The Beatles had their music video be the first one ever.

Extension of income - Bollywood films will usually have multiple songs in the film. the company that produced the song, T-Series,YRF and sony, will release multiple different versions of the song so they get money from YouTube and Ticket sales for the film itself. They usually end up releasing the teaser, a shorter version, the full song, a lyrical version, remixes, multiple different jukebox compilations of related songs and they might eventually re-release the song with some other variation after a few years to make people remember the song. For the song shown below, Dus Bahane, the original song is there, a mix or the original, the remake, the full video, the lyrical, the full video and the making of the video. the original song was created in 2005 and the remake was create 15 years later, in 2020. after 15 years T-SERIES is still making money from this song and the variations of music videos that have been created.

To showcase the directors’ skills (Thriller promotes Micheal Jackson and the director, John Landis. The song ended up being named greatest music video of all time by MTV, VH1, Rolling Stone and others)

To communicate a message (Political/Charitable) (This is America the centeral message of the song is about guns and violence)

Product Placement (Har ghoot mein swag) This song was produced by pepsi to help promote their product. They used famous actors to dance in the song and they used a famous singer to sing the song.

Synergy (Film, TV Programs) Aila re aillaa This song was created to promote a film, Sooryavanshi. This way the creators of the film gain profit when people watch the movie or when they watch the music videos.

Originally a marketing device to promote sales of the music since people can not only listen to the music but they can also watch a video to that song. Music on the Internet is consumed and forgotten about daily, if not hourly. So from a record label point of view, an artist needs something bigger than an MP3 to get noticed. there isn't much else to add on with music other than a video in any form. With YouTube being the 2nd biggest search engine, artists would want to create a video to help engage such a large audience and make sure that the video that they create is memorable. Imagine trying to watch a music video on YouTube and it's just an image of the album art. People would find it boring and forgetful, especially nowadays when there is so much content online and people will forget about a trend within a few months or days.
