Personal statement
Whether it’s constructing a story or something visually appealing, I love creating and editing videos. I want to study advertising as I really enjoy it and I believe it will help me get better as an editor and a video creator. I have been interested in creating and editing videos from a very young age now. I initially started a YouTube channel and that’s where I started getting interested in editing video and, over time, I started learning how to use more complex software such as DaVinci Resolve and HitFilm Express. I started getting more into visual effects as well and I believe I would be amazing at advertising a product or for a brand. In the future, I would want to become either a freelance editor or work at a marketing agency and studying advertising would help me achieve that goal.
Over the summer in 2021, I completed an internship with Levi’s. This internship gave me a lot of knowledge about how the store functions and how to handle a customer. The internship helped me grow my collaboration skills since there was always 1 more person in the store with me. I would also try to talk to a customer whenever I got the chance to which helped build my social skills. I also worked on WSO’s Got Talent which was my schools talent show. This was the biggest project I’ve done as it was almost 30 minutes long. I was constantly communicating with the teacher that was in charge and we kept improving it. I also filmed and edited a video for my school about the unsung hero’s event which is usually has a big celebration breakfast for the winners. I filmed and edited the video for year 9. I also volunteer as the editor for WSO Weekly which was like a weekly news update about what is happening in the school. I would edit a video for them every alternate week and I would get feedback on every video that I edited by the manager which was another student.
I am currently completing the IBCP course. My subjects are IB ITGS, IB Film and a Level 3 BTEC in Creative Media Production. Studying the BTEC and IB film have helped my test my editing skills as before doing these subjects I never knew what I could do. I have learned how to mask and motion track, 2 things I never thought I would be able to do. In the BTEC I’ve learnt a lot about conducting research on a project. ITGS has helped me get a better understanding how computers are used by different people and in different jobs. I think these subjects will help study advertising as I have gained a lot of research skills from media and the technical skills from both media and film.
I am a trained peer mentor in my school which means I got assigned a mentee to mentor but instead of it being subject based it was more like a general chat once a week to see how they’re doing. I would usually talk to my mentee about how he was doing, difference between A-Level and IB, other times we would talk about sports and videogames. It was a really calming session since I didn’t need to worry about work and all I would be doing is helping a student grow his social skills. I do also occasionally help my mom with her business. She is an event decorator and I usually either help her set up the party or I design and print stuff for her like labels, e-invites, table décor and more. For Diwali she decided to introduce gift hampers and had a few preset designs, I did the photography for the product to show the packaging. I do also intend to make a website for her business.
In conclusion, I believe in the future I would be great as an advertiser as I have a lot of the technical skills, that acquiredthrough my BTEC Media course and the volunteer work that I have completed around my school, that are required tocreate compelling advertisement for a brand or a product.
